Development of documentation on the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI)

By Resolution MEPC.328(76) at the 76th session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee, amendments were adopted to Annex VI of the international MARPOL convention regarding technical and operational measures aimed at the decarbonization of international shipping, which entered into force on November 1, 2022.

For ships of 400 gross tonnage and above engaged in international voyages, it is required to calculate the Energy Efficiency Index for Existing Ships (EEXI) prior to the commencement of the first annual, intermediate or renewal air pollution prevention survey (Annex VI Chapter 3, MARPOL), or the initial Energy Efficiency/Carbon Intensity survey (Annex VI Chapter 4, MARPOL), whichever is the first on or after 1 January 2023.

For ships having a gross tonnage of 5000 or more before 01.01.2023, the Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) should include a description of the methodology, the calculation of the ship's service indicator CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) and the procedure for submitting data to the ship's Flag Administration or Recognized Organization and other procedures required by IMO Resolution MEPC.339(76)

If the calculations show that the achieved EEXI is higher than the required EEXI, then it is necessary to take measures to improve the energy efficiency of the ship.
